Jackdaw is a 50 ft Traditional Stern narrowboat built by Lorenz & Co in 1989/90 and fitted out by her first owner, Andy Fitton, with subsequent upgrades and improvements by me. She was professionally repainted in November 2009 and was last 'blacked' in April 2010. During my 8+ years ownership she has been blacked every two years.

Last engine service November 2010.

Like any 'twenty something' narrowboat she shows her age in places and there are always things that need a lick of paint or varnish but she is a very sound vessel that is 'ready to cruise' and enjoy.

Internal accommodation is also 'traditional' in that she has a reasonably authentic boatman's cabin and forward of that a large engine room.

The remainder of the cabin (around 24' or so) is 'all mod con.' by comparison and includes 230/240v electrics and modern appliances in the galley (electric kettle, fridge freezer, microwave oven etc.).

Jackdaw is powered by a 1978 Lister HRW3M that is somewhat OTT in a narrowboat but apparently was originally installed new in one back in 1978. Perhaps it was a deep-draught, working boat rather than a modern (comparatively shallow-draught) vessel?

With over 150 Nm of torque available at just 1200 rpm this engine would be capable of powering a much larger vessel and delivering (via a hydraulic system say) main propulsion, bow thruster and considerable electricity generation as well. However, it seems more that happy to idle away for day after day and is surprisingly economical. The only time I have had it working fairly hard was on the tidal crossing to the Ribble Link (July 2010), where it performed admirably.

Jackdaw is now 'gas free' with an electric fridge freezer and a Dickinson Bering (diesel-fired) Cook Stove (with water coil) that is plumbed into the radiator circuit so capable of providing background heating. For more information on the diesel stove see Dickinson spec. sheet.

The former gas locker has had the drain points sealed and is now general storage. This has allowed the ballast to be adjusted to sit the boat less 'bow high' in the water. As well as looking much better, the roof  now drains more efficiently and she swims and handles even better too.

She is indeed an excellent swimmer, making rapid progress through the water with very little bow wave or wash, a real credit to her builder, Roger Lorenz.

With her large rudder, Jackdaw has the advantage of steering effectively without the engine in gear.
